The tutorial doesn’t explain secure zones very well, so it is something I would like to be updated in the future by the developer. It is only for putting people on planes and taking them off of planes. Otherwise, there don’t have to be any more secure zones in the terminal. For this reason, every way to get on a plane, whether it is to walk on or use a shuttle bus must include an attachment to the secure zone where people have already gone through scanners. So similarly to a real-life airport, there are security checkpoints before getting on a plane. I have thankfully figured it out a bit and I can now explain it thoroughly. The most confusing system this game has to be the security system. Once a terminal is set up with a staff room and appropriate staff are hired, the terminal is ready to have security set up. This is the major expense when creating a medium aircraft airport. There must also be a terminal for people to wait in and get checked in. The architecture set up to provide aviation gasoline will not work and are now pointless unless the player decides to keep a small airport running simultaneously. The first real change is that medium sized aircraft are considered jets and thus need jet fuel.
Their runway is also quite a bit larger, so more space may be required to be bought before a medium sized aircraft airport can be built. Medium aircraft need more space, which is one of the first downsides to them despite the fact that they are super profitable.

It is for this reason that it is a good idea to upgrade to medium sized airplanes for income, though they require quite a bit more resources until they become profitable. The real downside to small private planes is that they are inconsistent in terms of amount that come in each day.
